The automaker is the joint venture partner of Honda and Toyota in China, and has an electric car brand called Aion. Expanding outside ChinaLike other automakers in China, GAC is also turning overseas. China's overseas car sales surged last year, putting the country on par with Japan as the world's largest exporter of cars. Dyer expects that to drive overseas demand for Chinese electric cars. Chinese consumers placed almost twice as much importance on tech features compared with U.S. consumers, Dyer said, citing AlixPartners' survey.

The crisis in the Red Sea threatens to damage the economy by increasing prices on consumers and delaying the shipment of goods. A Houthi official vowed on Wednesday that attacks on “Israeli-linked” vessels in the Red Sea as well as the Arabian Sea will continue. Ikea also does not foresee any product shortages from the Red Sea problems. “Shippers are now much better at using alternative ways of moving their goods around the world,” Zandi said. “We have not seen the situation in the Red Sea translate into material movements in prices in the US such as consumer goods and gasoline prices,” Schwartz said.

"If so, we expect the soaring freight rates and equipment shortage will continue till the third quarter," it advised clients. This would be on top of the revenue lost by diverted container vessels which are required to pay between $500,000-$600,000 per transit. "However, given the longer transit times vessels are experiencing, the market may face a shortage of empties across Asia until sailings normalize." Evelyn Fornes, Home Depot spokeswoman, said it is working with logistics carriers to find alternate routes to limit any impact from the Red Sea conflict. East Coast freight rates soar While freight rates for U.S. West Coast ports have yet to spike, freight rates for the East Coast and Gulf are up.

CNN —Winning a majority party’s nomination for speaker of the House of Representatives usually elevates a lawmaker into the pantheon of American political leaders. But this is about more than the plight of a Republican Party that often looks like it’s tearing itself apart. If the dysfunctional House GOP majority cannot get its act together, the US government could run out of funding before Thanksgiving week – and millions of Americans could pay the price. As former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, himself a notoriously polarizing figure, said on Fox News this weekend: “They got big decisions coming down the road. We don’t have someone who is the speaker of the House to negotiate with the White House, with Senate Democrats who are in the majority.

More Chinese companies are becoming global players. In all, BYD, state-owned SAIC and other Chinese companies gained 9% of the global electric car market in the second quarter, up from 5% in the second quarter, Counterpoint Research said. That's on top of the companies' share in the domestic Chinese market — the largest globally for autos. For the full year, XCMG has an export sales growth target of 50% growth, UBS stock analyst Phyllis Wang and a team said in a Sept. 4 note. Chinese companies have been trying to "go global" for years, with tacit encouragement from Beijing.

UAE oil giant ADNOC — run by the president of the COP28 climate conference — is expected to spend more than $1 billion every month this decade on fossil fuels, according to new analysis by international NGO Global Witness. It comes ahead of the COP28 climate summit, with Dubai set to host the U.N.'s annual conference from Nov. 30 through to Dec. 12. The person overseeing the talks, Sultan al-Jaber, is chief executive of ADNOC (the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) — one of the world's largest oil and gas firms. His position as both COP28 president and ADNOC CEO caused dismay among civil society groups and U.S. and EU lawmakers, although several government ministers have since defended his appointment. It means that ADNOC is forecast to spend nearly seven times more on fossil fuels through to 2030 than it does on "low-carbon solution" projects.

Western automakers are rattled, with Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Peugeot-to-Fiat carmaker Stellantis (STLAM.MI), warning last month of an "invasion" of cheap Chinese EVs in Europe. But Chinese brands are likely to struggle to sell cars in Europe as cheaply as at home. CONSUMER TRUSTWhile some Chinese brands, such as MG, are well known in Europe, others like XPeng (9868.HK) and Nio need to build trust. Surveys indicate most potential EV buyers in Europe do not recognise Chinese brands. But among those aware of Chinese brands, 1% or fewer would consider buying one.

"Store Closing" signs at a Buy Buy Baby store in the Brooklyn borough of New York, on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023. The New Jersey baby retailer that bought Buy Buy Baby's intellectual property from its bankrupt parent company Bed Bath and Beyond also snatched up 11 of its leases and is well-positioned to reopen stores, court records show. However, Dream on Me could use the Buy Buy Baby IP assets it already obtained – plus the leases – to reopen the beloved chain. The leases Dream on Me won at auction, which are considered to be in prime real estate locations, are primarily dotted across the Northeast. Dream on Me, founded in 1988, has at least six brands under its portfolio, including Evolur Baby, Sweetpea Baby and Slumber Baby.

FDA approves first over-the-counter birth control pill
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( Carma Hassan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the birth control pill Opill to be available over-the-counter — the first nonprescription birth control pill in the United States. Opill is expected to be available over-the-counter in stores by the end of March 2024. The FDA has faced pressure to allow Opill to go over-the-counter from lawmakers as well as health care providers. A recent study showed that it has become harder for women to access reproductive health care services more broadly — such as routine screenings and birth control — in recent years. About 45% of women experienced at least one barrier to reproductive health care services in 2021, up 10% from 2017.

CNN —Buybuy Baby will close all of its stores as part of its parent company Bed Bath & Beyond’s ongoing bankruptcy liquidation. The deal did not include the chain’s 120 physical retail stores. Bed Bath & Beyond’s brand name, domain and loyalty program assets were purchased by Overstock.com for $21 million last month after filing for bankruptcy in April. The acquisition also did not include Bed Bath & Beyond’s brick-and-mortar stores, which have closed. In a March 2022 letter, former Bed Bath & Beyond activist investor Ryan Cohen said he believed Buybuy Baby was “much more valuable than the Company’s entire market capitalization today.”

Signs stating everything is on sale at a Buy Buy Baby store in the Brooklyn borough of New York, Feb. 6, 2023. Buy Buy Baby's stores are set to disappear after a last ditch effort to save the chain and keep the business alive fell apart, CNBC has learned. Sixth Street was not unreasonable but there was a difference in opinion on valuation," he said. However, nearly three months into liquidation sales at Buy Buy Baby's 120 stores, there was very little left to bid on besides its IP, empty stores, leases and whatever inventory was left, said the source. During a hearing in federal bankruptcy court in Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday, Judge Vincent Papalia approved the sale of Buy Buy Baby's intellectual property to Dream on Me as one of the bidder's staffers, who appeared virtually via Zoom for the hearing, was seen smoking a cigarette on screen.

"Store Closing" signs at a Buy Buy Baby store in the Brooklyn borough of New York, on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023. While it would be unusual, Bed Bath & Beyond could still accept a bid for Buy Buy Baby early next week. The company, a little known New Jersey-based retailer and one of Buy Buy Baby's former suppliers, agreed to buy its trademark and digital assets for $15.5 million if no higher bids arise. As the auction process dragged on and Buy Buy Baby's inventory dwindled, so did its value. It is not clear what Dream on Me plans to do with Buy Buy Baby if it ends up the ultimate victor.

June 28 (Reuters) - Bed Bath & Beyond is splitting the bankruptcy-run auction of its Buy Buy Baby chain into two phases, CNBC reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. CNBC also said the home goods retailer was planning to host a separate auction, potentially on Thursday, where buyers can submit bids to keep Buy Buy Baby and its stores running as a going concern. Bed Bath & Beyond did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. Some Bed Bath & Beyond brands including its Buy Buy Baby chain, which sells products for infants and toddlers, had attracted interest from investment firms Go Global Retail and Sixth Street Partners, according to media reports.
